Séamus Connolly is one of Ireland’s leading bronze portrait sculptors, best known for his highly acclaimed life-size portraits.
Seamus runs a bronze foundry in West Clare and rather uniquely, takes all his work from inception in clay, through to being finally cast in bronze, right here in his own workshop – all of which is intrinsically linked to the Gallery here.
His main body of work includes lifesize bronze portraits of various public figures, from John B Keane in Listowel, Dermot Earley in Roscommon, Richard Harris in Kilkee, Mick Mackey in Castleconnell, Frank McCourt in Limerick and GAA all-star Paidi O Se in Ventry, Co. Kerry, Anthony ‘Axel’ Foley in Thomand Park and Gerry O Malley in Roscommon. He is currently working on a lifesize of the late American President John F Kennedy to be unveiled in Bruff, Co. Limerick this year (2018). But Seamus is equally sought after for his artistic and stylized bronze pieces, which we stock here in the Gallery.
He has a fantastic reputation for these individual, quirky sculptures, most of which are inspired by animals and nature and sit particularly well in people’s homes.
His work is currently owned by the OPW, the Irish Government, the GAA, the National Irish Writers Museum as well as a list of high end clientiele from the Swiss Ambassador to Bertie Ahern and even the inimitable Pauline McGlinn – as well as by a list of private collectors.
