Slip Away in the Night

As Winter draws in, there are two things that become hugely familiar and somewhat nostalgic to us. One is the winter night skies, with varying degrees of icy pink that generally mean cold and crisp weather to is to follow. The other is the lights – what appears like perhaps the warm glow of city lights in the distance, beyond the trees and landscape, the many twinkling lights – in the distance and all-round, particularly as you drive home on those crisp, December evenings. For some, since hanging in the gallery for the first time recently, this painting has evoked emotion – good emotion – memories of times gone by; memories of being in the car as a child, memories of being with loved ones; sparking that nostalgic joy of heading home after Christmas shopping, a car laden with treats.
For one or two, this view has instantly resonated with them as a view they can pinpoint in their own mind’s eye. Everyone’s take is so personal and so different – and that is how it should be.
