Gillian Murphy’s Celestial Series (this is Celestial I) is so exciting. Sharp and striking and very beautifully executed. Gillian took her inspiration for these paintings from a sculptor called Alexander Calder. Calder was famous in the early nineteen hundreds, for producing kinetic sculptures, that were a bit like mobiles. His sculptures were beautiful due to their subtle balance of form and colour and were basically depicting art in motion. Murphy’s take on this, using oil and cold wax on board, is, quite simply, stunning and sure makes an impact on the wall.
